Google I/O 2023: Google Photos Adds New AI Feature ‘Magic Editor’ – Why It Matters
At Google I/O 2023, US tech giant Google introduced a new AI-based editing feature called “Magic Editor” for Google Photos, which allows users to make significant changes to their images. This feature includes enhancing the sky, moving objects or people in the photo, and removing people from the background. It will be available to pre-selected Pixel users later this year.
According to Google, Magic Editor can perform complex edits automatically by adjusting specific parts of an image to remove unwanted objects, change composition by repositioning the subject, and updating elements such as the sky.
The Magic Editor can also create new content in image positioning to change the way cropping and resizing work, a feature that will likely expand beyond Pixel phones in the future, the company said.
To combat AI-generated “deep fake” images, Google has also announced that it plans to provide more context to images found through Google search. Images show the context of how the image and similar images were originally indexed. From Google, where the image first appeared and where else it has been online.
Image information can be found by clicking on the three dots on the image in the Google image search results, by swiping up on the image in the Google application, or by searching with the image in Google Lens.
The company has also introduced Immersive View on Google Maps in certain cities to allow users to get a 3D view of the area. Maps will soon add an Immersive View to routes so users can “visualize every part of the route” before the trip. It will be released in the coming months in Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Paris, Seattle, San Francisco, San Jose, Tokyo and Venice
